Early Bloomers for the Pollinators
Pollinators need early spring nectar to munch on. Having a few early bloomers in your yard is important for emerging insects and local bird populations. There are also fewer floral resources for pollinators in the late part of fall. Planting both early and late bloomers will provide much needed nourishment to the ecosystem. You’ll also enjoy having more color in your yard for more of your year.
Golden Currant, Santa Fe Phylox, Poppy Mallow, Mexican Primrose, Desert Four O’ Clocks, Scarlet Gaura, Globemallow, Choke Cherry and Blanketflower are all native early spring bloomers. Most of the native cacti like Claret Cup, Cholla, Hedgehog, Prickly Pear and Yuccas are also considered early bloomers.
Asters, Chamisa, Goldenrod, Tickseed, Mexican Hats and sunflowers are native late summer/fall bloomers.
We know that pollinators are struggling. Helping them is as easy as maintaining a pesticide free yard with native plantings.
